There are many reasons why people choose to become freelancers. It might be to avoid the stress and uncertainty of a fixed salary, or it could be that they want to have more freedom and flexibility with their work. Whatever the motivation, there is no doubt that freelancing offers many advantages over a full-time job.
One of the biggest benefits of freelancing is that you have complete control over your professional life. In interviews and on blogs, freelancers often mention that the thing they love the most about their work is being able to decide which projects they accept or reject, when to take time off and how much to charge for their services. This is something that you don’t have when you’re a traditional employee of a company, and it can be very liberating.
Another big benefit of freelancing is that you can set your own hours. This might not sound like a big deal, but for people who have family commitments or other responsibilities outside of their work, this can be very important. It also allows you to create a work-life balance that suits your lifestyle. Being your own boss can be a huge positive, but it can also be a challenge if you’re not used to it. You need to be confident, eager and able to manage your own finances if you’re going to be self- employed.
Finally, being a freelancer can give you more scope for creativity and growth. For example, if you find yourself doing the same kind of work for a lot of clients, it can be challenging to get out of a rut. If you freelance, however, you can take on different kinds of projects and work with new people all the time. This can help you to develop your skills and find new clients who value the services you provide.
The downside of all this is that you don’t have the security and stability that comes with a full-time job. You might not always have a steady flow of income, and you’ll probably need to save up for holidays or other unexpected expenses. You won’t have the benefit of health insurance or other employee benefits, either.
In the current economic climate, the idea of a ‘job for life’ is starting to disappear. Redundancies are common, and companies are relying more on zero hour contracts rather than hiring full-time staff. For these reasons, more and more people are choosing to go freelance. For some people, this is the perfect solution to the lack of security in the workplace. For others, the freedom, flexibility and financial independence of freelancing is more than worth the risk of unstable income. You need to decide if you’re willing to take that risk in order to achieve your professional goals.
